Twitch has announced that they are offering streamers a new option that will allow them to reduce the delay that viewers experience when watching Twitch streams. This new feature is currently in Beta, and must be activated manually by streamers. When a streamer enables the reduce stream delay feature their video segment size will be reduced from four seconds to two which means that the streaming video will reach users faster.
This feature could be useful for streamers that feature chat interaction as a key part of their viewing experience. The reduction in delay will result in what feels like a snappier more realtime conversation between streamers and their chat. Twitch noted that the reduction in delay could cause increased buffering and other negative side effects for viewers with sub-par internet connections. As such streamers that do not rely on viewer interaction may wish to leave the delay intact.
