The news is breaking this evening that Team Impulse Mid Laner Yu 'XiaoWeiXiao' Xian is set to be banned or possibly fined for ELO boosting, as confirmed by Riot representative Hunter Leigh on Twitter. Rumours are circulating that the Chinese star received a significant sum for the act, although whether it was enough to risk a long ban or hefty fine only time will tell, with the story currently unfolding.
While the Chinese League community has a lot of issues with ELO boosting, it was more prevalent in seasons 2-3 of LCS, with the practice somewhat dying down. Sources within Chinese eSports tell ESportsHeaven that there are still a number of Challenger players involved in boosting, but with the player on a salary in the region of $15k plus living expenses at his current team, it seems a huge risk, although early signs suggest he may not be dropped by Impulse for this.
The wider question as to whether Riot should police this issue, and also how they will manage to be consistent with the 2013 rulings is yet to be resolved, and at this point in time the full details have yet to emerge. Bringing the game into disrepute is something the company clearly takes seriously though, and there is speculation that XWX will face a far harsher punishment than those who have been caught ELO boosting before him.
