Overwatch 2 may be a new game, but Mercy's annoyance has remained the same.Nothing is as frustrating to deal with as a Mercy player with good movement. Between resurrecting downed opponents and damage-boosting allies, Mercy is a prevalent nuisance in Overwatch 2. So, how do you counter Mercy?DPSThere is a popular belief that having a sniper is a hard counter to Mercy. We'd agree at lower ranks or skill levels, but Mercy players with strong movement can be incredibly difficult to hit. For this reason, we're going to err on the side of caution and recommend DPS heroes that are not as aim-reliant. Take for instance heroes like Cassidy and Ashe. While he is very aim-reliant, Cassidy does still have access to his Magnetic Grenade. Playing on either the frontline as a tank buster or a close flank could be the gift you're looking for. This positioning naturally threatens the Mercy and allows for heavy pressure to keep her moving. And if she's moving, it's harder for Mercy to keep line of sight on her pocket and/or she can't be resurrecting. And God forbid you get in close enough for a sticky nade? Cassidy is a solid counter if the opposing Mercy is giving you trouble. In a similar vein, Ashe provides her own counters. Dynamite is the golden ticket here. Not only does this naturally counter Mercy due to her proximity to her teammates but this can also be a tool to fight her movement as well. Let's say you've playing opposite a cracked Mercy with movement you've never seen before. Hitting that Mercy is going to be next to impossible. However, having access to an AoE tool like Dynamite could be the difference maker for your team in clipping Mercy's wings. If you're looking for a more creative take, try looking at Mei when aiming to counter Mercy. Think about who Mercy is often paired with, and no we don't mean Pharah. Sojourn, Ashe, Widowmaker, even Cassidy or a Hanzo at times--if we shut out their line of sight, we buy our team time. A well-placed Ice Wall not only could stop that resurrection but it could also put both targets out of position.TankHands down, Sigma is one of the best answers to a lot of what Mercy brings and facilitates. His rock counters Resurrect. His barrier can be stuffed in the face of her preferred damage boost target. His effective range can pressure her around the corner and even vertically. Sigma is a great choice when looking to counter a Mercy. Right under Sigma sits D.Va. In a lot of the same ways Sigma counters Mercy, minus the CC ability, D.Va provides that same coverage. She can mark any kind of Mercy pocket, she can chase the Mercy all over the map, she can even use her ultimate as a last-ditch effort to zone away that pesky moth. And when our team isn't able to properly handle or position to fight the incoming Resurrect, Winston or Doomfist counters her nicely. While it's not as elegant, if either Winston or Doomfist holds their cooldowns in anticipation of Mercy's Resurrect, they can easily kill her or displace her and interrupt the cast. SupportSupports are a touch more difficult to counter Mercy, but there are some choices here to assist your team.Ana is rarely a bad pick. Sleep Dart provides an extra layer of Resurrect defense and also could come in clutch for plucking the Mercy out of the sky. On top of that, Sleep Dart could also be used to shut down her damage-boost target as well.Mercy's ultimate, Valkyrie, simply put, provides her with an AoE heal. A well-placed Biotic Grenade limits Mercy's HPS quite well. Zenyatta can kind of play as a double-edged sword into Mercy. While he does fall prey oftentimes to Mercy's likely duo partners, his Discord Orb is invaluable. Place it on the Mercy? This keeps her head low and having to play for cover.Place it on her tank? This punishes her single-target healing capability. Place it on her pocket? This usually will result in the Mercy either trying to Resurrect the target to be put out of position. While it's fairly risky, Zenyatta can be a more unorthodox choice when looking to counter Mercy. Images via Blizzard Entertainment
