We've all been there. You load into Junkertown or Circuit Royale and this Ashe just can't miss even if she tried. How has this happened? How can we counter Ashe?
Overwatch 2 has kicked open the door to individual skill expression. The biggest winner from the changes made to Overwatch 2 have been the hitscan DPS cast. With her ability to pressure from a considerable range, her explosive AoE damage, and her utility, Ashe can be a handful to deal with for tanks and DPS alike. So how do you counter Ashe in Overwatch 2?Try a few of these tips.
Counter Ashe As DPS
Ashe is fairly immobile, so you're looking to leverage heroes with the ability to flanking power to counter her. She usually played either on defence or maps with significant high ground so baiting out her Coach Gun is going to be key. However, you want to keep in mind her range in that equation. For that reason, heroes like Echo and Pharah are out of the question. Tracer isn't bad generally speaking but depending on the map may not end up being the best pick. Genji and Sombra are the other two quick, dive-oriented heroes that are going to keep Ashe on the back foot. One pick that may seem a little out of place is Hanzo. While at first glance, you might question why he might be of value, especially regarding the criteria, but he's the exception to the rule. Hanzo's range on top of his ability to control horizontal space, either through spamming arrows with Storm Arrow or threatening a headshot with Recon Arrow, is next to none on this current patch. Counter Ashe As Tank
Tanks are a bit easier to come by when looking to counter Ashe. This is because it is less about which hero to pick and learning when and where to engage her. Ashe is going to be perched on those high ground and positioned at a distance. Knowing this, if you opt for heroes like Wrecking Ball and Winston, you have to consider how she's using her Coach Gun. If she recently used it to access the high ground, the you've got the green light. However, if Ashe has Coach Gun off cooldown, you have to plan around it. This means not Pile Driving directly in Ashe's effective range. This means using your barrier earlier on Winston. On the other hand, more stationary tanks like Reinhardt and Sigma have other angles to consider. These tanks have to worry more about shield management, planning for Dynamite, and rotating so they provide a good springboard for their team. For Reinhardt, it's about always moving--but not just haphazardly charging in. Playing for cover but also closing the distance between you and the Ashe is going to be key. With Sigma it's a little bit of the opposite. Your goal is to attempt to maintain your barrier as long as you can and stick it in her face. When you roll tank and aim to counter Ashe remember; it's not about the hero so much as how you use them.
Counter Ashe As Support
Support on the other hand is much more specific to countering Ashe.Try and limit yourself from playing more immobile supports like Zenyatta or Mercy. Without some impressive positioning prowess, you're going to find yourself in the enemy Ana. Ana is going to provide a lot of tools that can hamper Ashe, but plays a dangerous game. Biotec Grenade provides an immediate answer to Ashe's Dynamite, Sleep Dart can punish a more-stationary Ashe player, but Ana has to consider her positioning quite heavily. The last thing you want to do as a support is just plant your feet in the sight line of the consistent DPS threat. Supports that can dislocate are going to be crucial. Heroes like Lucio and Brigitte can force the enemy Ashe to have to use her Coach Gun to re-access the high ground if they land an ability that displaces. While it may be a little more controversial, don't count out Lifeweaver. Hero 37 has seen his fair share of buffs and he'll likely continue to be tuned at a foundational level. However, Petal Platform does provide an immediate answer to a tank player that is having a hard time contesting Ashe on the high ground. Images via Blizzard Entertainment
