After taking Overwatch 2 by storm, Mauga has become incredibly popular. However, Overwatch's newest hero has been nerfed heavily after a recent patch. How was Overwatch 2's Mauga nerfed?
Patch Details
While Mauga's base health was increased (250 HP -> 300 HP) his armor was decreased by a similar amount (250 armor -> 200 armor).A piece of balance that is often overlooked is ammo capacity. Mauga was also nerfed in this regard as well. Both Mauga's chainguns were reduced quite a bit. On top of that his ultimate, Cage Fight, has also seen a heavy nerf. Cage Fight now does not grant Mauga infinite ammo. However, it does still grant Mauga's Chainguns a fresh reload during its use. The biggest of Mauga's abilities that were hit was Cardiac Overdrive. Its lifesteal was decreased quite significantly (70% -> 60%). This nerf also includes an additional 2 seconds added to its cooldown.
Was Mauga's Nerf Enough?
We can speak until we're blue in the face about numbers, but was this enough to tone back Mauga? With how much of Mauga's kit is tied to his primary fire, restricting his ammo is a huge nerf. However, this nerf is not one to absolutely remove him from the viable hero pool. Overwatch 2 will see more tank variety with these changes, but rest assured Mauga isn't worthless. One of the better tanks, especially at lower ranks, is still Roadhog. With the ability to stand in front of Roadhog and output as much damage and sustainability as Mauga does, he still has a role within Overwatch.
Community Reaction?
The general community reaction to the recent Mauga nerfs has been positive. Worried about his overtunning since his release, fans of Overwatch 2 have be relieved to see the game's newest tank toned back. One Reddit user wrote that Mauga's "Ammo nerf sounds great in particular". This seemed to tackle the biggest issue of playing any other tank hero into Mauga. With so much ammo and with the ability to both deal damage and create mitigation for himself with his passive, this was a welcome change. However, the knock-on effects are where Overwatch community members seem stressed. Another Reddit user wrote, "Roadhog is strong but not to the same oppressive level as Mauga". However, they added that it was likely that the game would be in a better spot with these nerfs to Mauga. These nerfs would result in heroes like Sigma, Junkerqueen, and Ramattra having more viability. "At this point, it just feels intentional," wrote another user. "Nerf Mauga, buff another tank, when Roadhog gets nerfed that tanks op, the cycle repeats"Another use pointed towards a greater balance philosophy overhaul being needed for Overwatch 2. "The devs really need to take a season to just do sweeping balance changes but that's unlikely to happen, unfortunately."Overwatch has always had a history of releasing heroes quite overturned. However, now that Mauga is nerfed, things should be a bit better for Overwatch 2.
