In tonight’s Demacia Cup finals match, EDG swept OMG 3:0 to take the championship. After this match, EDG accepted our interview.
Q: Deft, you rarely used Vayne ever since your arrival at China. But today you got a penta-kill on Vayne. Why did you pick Vayne in the first game?
Deft: We won the first game, but not because of my superb Vayne play. I play Vayne frequently in Solo Queue. Yesterday my teammates in ban/pick recommended me to use Vayne and that’s why I picked it.
Q: PawN, you played Ezreal very well. What kind of situation should Ezreal mid be picked?
PawN: Usually Ezreal is picked when the opponents are vulnerable to poke or when I can guarantee that I won’t die.
Q: In the first game, PawN was focused by OMG. PawN is usually the focused target by the enemy team even before this game. Has EDG developed a strategy specifically for the situation when PawN is focused?
Clearlove: First of all, I think that PawN is extremely versatile. He is easy to gank for but doesn't require them, therefore I am not worried about mid lane and I can gank other lanes freely. Even though PawN was ganked a few times in the first game, he still scaled very well and output very high damage in team fights. So I only focused on helping bot lane to gain an advantage. I make up for the lack of mid lane counterganks by helping other lanes gaining an advantage.
Q: For the two Korean players, what is the difference between Demacia Cup and tournaments in Korea?
PawN: Demacia Cup has many fans and a large scale, but both tournaments have soundproof booths. Also, the temperature is very hot.
Deft: LPL doesn’t have soundproof booths, which I am a bit unfamiliar with. However, Demacia Cup has soundproof booths, it’s easier to get into the mood.
Q: PawN, how did you feel after being focused multiple times by OMG? How did you communicate with your teammates?
PawN: I was indeed focused by OMG’s mid and jungle in the first game. But I was confident that I would have higher damage output than Ahri in team fights. I also would have scaled better.
Q: Clearlove, did you expect OMG to play so aggressively today?
Clearlove: We had similar team comps. We were also familiar with how they play. I could say that we were prepared for today’s game.
Q: OMG brought out their two trump cards: Nocturne and Rengar. Do you think that their two ultimates were used effectively?
Clearlove: In the first game, Nocturne successfully shut down our Azir and Shen’s ult. It was kind of effective, but in team fights our team comp could completely defeat them because their champions need to rush/advance on us, and our team comp could protect the backline very well to make sure that the two core carries can output damage in a safe environment. After seeing OMG’s comp in the first game, I believe that EDG had a high chance of winning. In the other game, OMG picked an ok comp with Rengar and Lulu forced engage. But I feel like Rengar isn’t a great matchup against Rek’sai because his ultimate can be easily answered by Rek’sai.
Q: In LPL, EDG played against many teams, sometimes losing the game. Entering Demacia Cup’s final stages, EDG almost completely crushed all of their games. Without talking about the team comps, what is the other main reason for your success?
Clearlove: Because we were prepared, and PawN returned to the team. Our mid-jungle synergy, and therefore team synergy, was vastly improved. Since PawN has the ability to DPS and communicate with the team well, I can comfortably pick tanky champions.
Q: EDG picked up several national championships since their inception. How do you, Clearlove, feel as the oldest player in EDG? Do you have anything to say to your retired teammates?
Clearlove: You reap what you sow. Everyone has their own choice. I hope the retired players can live their lives better and better on their own paths. I hope they can be happy every day.
Q: Any celebration events tonight?
AmazingJ: I follow whatever the club is doing.
After two seconds, AmazingJ adds: “Including the champion select.” (Everybody laughs)
