Jae-hyeok "Carpe" Lee hails from South Korea. Formerly of teams such as BK Stars and Selfless, Carpe now calls FaZe Clan his home. Recently, FaZe Clan has qualified for the Overwatch Season 1 playoff stage where they still test their might against other top North American teams. Carpe and myself sat and had a brief yet charming discussion on his exodus to North America, his thoughts of other teams in North America, and we delve a bit into his past. (Author's Note: With permission from Jae-hyeok Lee, the responses have been edited for sentence structure and readability)
?????(Annyeonghaseyo)! How are you this evening Carpe?
Hello, I’m good and I’m so happy now that we get to go to the Contenders LAN. I am very excited!
How have you enjoyed your time in America? Have you adjusted well?
Yeah, I live very well. Sometimes I do miss Korean food, though. [laughs] I like ‘In and out’ a lot.
Speaking of your time in Korea, could you talk about BK Stars? Who were you closest with on the team?
BK Stars was my first team and I played with them for APEX Season 2 and 3. Every player on that team had great potential, but we didn't get good results so we disbanded.Out of all the players on BK Stars, I was very close with Bunny. He is great Tracer player!
What do you think of Lunatic Hai #2? Have you watched any of their games?
Yeah, I watch Bunny’s new team. He is still so great on Tracer and Alarm is very good with Zenyatta and Ana. If they practice more they can be top tier team.
With FaZe Clan, what do you think your team's biggest strength is?
All of the players have good mechanics, but our strongest aspect is my synergy with ShaDowBurn. ShaDowBurn is too gosu!
When you go to California for Contenders LAN, what team are you worried about the most and why?
EnVyUs because they are the only team we haven't beaten in Contenders. Their team synergy is so good. The Taimou and Effect DPS duo is very strong! EnVyUs is in many ways a similar team to FaZe Clan.
How do you like new Junkrat? Is he OP?
Yes! He is so OP! His ult is too good now. Junkrat did receive an ult speed reduction, but it’s still so OP.
What about Mercy? Do you think she’s strong as well?
New Mercy is so strong. Right now, I think Mercy is better than Ana.
Ohhh, really? I know in Korea, teams like KongDoo Uncia and some teams in China like using Mercy and McCree. Is Mercy's best partner still Pharah?
No, I think Mercy and McCree is much better then Pharah. Mercy and Zenyatta is good too.
What is your favorite memory that you’ve made in America?
My favorite memory? Hmmm, nothing special. Every day is fun, I enjoy it all equally.
Here is a hard one; who do you think the best team is in the world?
Hmmmmm, that is a very hard question. I think there is not a ‘best team’ right now. Any top team can beat each other.
Did you play a lot of games before Overwatch?
Yep, I played a bit of CS: GO and League of Legends.
Oh? What lane did you play in League?
Mid [laughs]. I actually played Zed a lot. I only got to Diamond, I was not that high on the ladder. [laughs]
If you had to change one thing about Overwatch, what would you change?
I would like to change the rank system. It seems that it is still at an imbalance.
Awesome! Thanks for sitting down with me Carpe, where can people find you and do you have a message for your fans and supporters?
Thanks to the fans who support me! I will always try to do my best for you.Thank you for inviting me to do this interview!
