Rotterdam "e;If we all just put in the right amount of work we"e;re going to have plenty of years of StarCraft ahead of us"e;

It's rare to find someone in esports with the kind of history that Kevin ‘Rotterdam’ van der Kooi has. Establishing himself as a top European Orc player and commentator during Warcraft 3’s heyday, Rotterdam entered the age of StarCraft 2 carrying a lot of weight to his name.

Weight alone won’t make a career though. Rotterdam was thrust into the role of SC2 caster in the very first HomeStory Cup tournament, having almost no experience with the then fresh RTS title. Using his WC3 commentating skills and hard work though, the Dutchman was quick to rise through the scene, working as an ESL in house caster and later moving to America to work with NASL.

The very first esports match that I ever watched was Dimaga vs BratOK in the NASL season 2 offline finals event. Without knowing a single thing about esports or StarCraft 2, I was still completely enthralled by what I was seeing on screen. I had stumbled across the amazing scifi spectacle that is SC2 esports and I was instantly in love. An enormous part of this experience was, of course, the casters. The soon-to-be-iconic duo of MrBitter and Rotterdam were the guiding force that brought me into SC2.

Though MrBitter departed from the spotlight in 2014 for a behind the scenes role in Red Bull, Rotterdam carried on casting SC2 and is almost universally considered to be one of the best SC2 casters in the scene. With no signs of the SC2 passion train slowing down, I spoke to Rotti about his past, present, and future in the esports industry.
