SK Telecom T1 continues to shut down any doubts about them. In one of the cleanest games at the otherwise crazy World Championships, SKT snowballed straight through I May. The kings of South Korea look ready to keep their world title safely in their clutches. Colin “CD Mangaka” caught up with Lee “Duke” Ho-seong to get his thoughts on why SKT is playing so well, how strong SKT is, and his high opinion of Cloud9 Jung “Impact” Eon-yeong.
Colin Nimer: I’m with Lee “Duke” Ho-seong after SKT had a decisive victory over I May. I May used a substitute mid laner in order to play Ryze. Is that something that worried you guys at all during the pick and ban phase or were you ready for that?
Lee Ho-seong: We were expecting it a little. We heard that (Kang "BaeMe" Yang-hyun) was playing a lot of Ryze in solo queue, so we were ready.
Colin Nimer: We saw Kang "Blank" Sun-gu today and Bae “Bengi” Seong-woong yesterday and both looked really good. What have you guys been doing to help them step-up as a team, not pay too much attention to the criticism, and come into the world championship looking as good as they have?
LH: There wasn’t much of a pep-talk or anything like that. When laners perform in games, junglers perform better.
CN: You’ve experienced a lot of international success in your career. You’ve won an IEM with KT, another one with SKT, and then MSI with SKT. Now you’re at your fourth international event, and your first worlds. Do you think you can keep that streak going, or is it possible for SKT to lose at this Worlds?
LH: I cannot even imagine that there is a slight chance of us losing, since the world championship is the most prestige. The others are important too, but this is the most prestigious. I’ve never imagined losing this tournament.
CN: In the top lane, we’ve seen both tanks like Poppy and Trundle and carries like Jayce. It seems like a very diverse meta. What do you think is going to happen with the top lane meta as the meta goes on? Will it sway to one side, or will it remain fairly diverse?
LH: I’m not really sure of the endpoint of the top meta here. I think that having a tank is really convenient for teamfights and in any game, but I’m not certain. I think it might favor towards tanks, but it depends a lot on the pick and bans of a game. It could change game to game.
CN: SKT now stands 2-0 in the group, and we saw that long game between Flash Wolves and Cloud9 where Flash Wolves threw it, and you guys handedly beat I May. Who do you think is going to take second in groups, assuming that you guys take first?
LH: I initially thought Flash Wolves would take second, but after them losing twice in such a dramatic fashion, getting early leads and then failing to close, I think it will be C9.
CN: Why C9 over I May?
LH: Because of Impact.
CN: Team SoloMid has looked like one of the best western teams in the tournament. Everyone is excited to see Bjergsen play Faker, but I want to know what you think of playing Hauntzer? Do you think he’s going to give you any trouble?
LH: I don’t think he has much of an advantage over me. It’s not uneven or anything. After playing against Impact with C9, I won’t have much of a problem.
