The 2023 Overwatch World Cup Groups revealed

EsportsHeaven 2023-10-18 12:55:28

The 2023 Overwatch World Cup groups have been revealed After qualifying earlier this June, 16 teams have been divided into 4 groups that will race to book their tickets to the playoffs.

Group A - Korea And Who?

Group A this year for the World Cup seem like a clear vote.  The road is clear for Team South Korea.  With multiple gold medals, it is almost assured that Team South Korea will advance as the first seed. Next to them, it is anyone's game.  Team Colombia is a dark horse threat with former Overwatch League professional Josh "Eqo" Corona. Team Finland has always been a contender throughout the past World Cups.  Packing multiple former Overwatch League players like Paavo "Sauna" Ulmanen and Roni "LhCloudy" Tiihonen, can they maintain? Team Mexico are no chumps either. Led by former San Francisco Shock tank David "nomy" Osmar, this is a team with something to prove. Not just for themselves but for their region. That said, the two clear favourites are Team South Korea and Team Finland.  Their sheer experience both at the World Cup and at the professional level is likely too hard to overcome.

Group B - Canada Falls?

The 2023 Overwatch World Cup usually see Team Canada as a podium favourite. However, this year looks to be their most competitive test yet.  Team Australia is a team that is ready to cement themselves as a region to watch. Standing atop the group is Team United Kingdom. Packed to the brim with former Overwatch League players like Kai "Kai" Collins, Daniel "FunnyAstro" Hathaway, and Jamie "Backbone" O'Neill, Team UK are easy favourites. Team Brazil looks to avenge their 2016 performance this year.  After missing the main stage in 2017 and 2018 and dropping out of the 2019 Overwatch World Cup, the core from War Pigs comes into the event with something to prove.  In previous years we'd cement Team Canada as an easy lock to advance with the first seed.  Now, it is Team UK that takes that slot.  Outside of the United Kingdom, Group B's 2nd seed is anyone's game.

Group C - Spain Surprise?

Group C this year could feature some surprising results. With the calibre of talent on their roster, Team China should make it out of this year with ease.  Past that, they should also be considered in the mix for gold at this year's Overwatch World Cup. Next to them are Team Spain, a dark horse from Europe.  Spain managed to not only defeat Team Denmark but also dealt a loss to Team France. This marks them not only as a threat but also a team that is likely to advance from this group. Rounding out the group we have Team Hong Kong and Team Thailand. Both teams are fielding experienced players but are likely not enough to take a shot at Group C's 2nd seed.  This is the Team China show with the opening act of Team Spain.

Group D - The Group Of Death

Every World Cup in almost any competitive venture that has one has a group of death. For 2023 it is Group D. The defending gold medalists, Team United States, should be an easy lock to advance as the group's first seed. However, the second seed will likely be a team most casual fans are unfamiliar with.  The uninitiated will likely point toward Team France as they boast not only former Overwatch League professionals but always are World Cup contenders. Team Japan on the other hand are usually better than most expect but fail to punch out of the group stage. This year, Group D's 2nd seed will likely be Team Saudi Arabia advancing out of the group stage. We saw many of their players earlier this year in the 2023 Overwatch League Pro-Am and surprised a lot of people.  Group D should see the USA and Saudi Arabia advance into the 2023 Overwatch World Cup playoffs.  The 2023 Overwatch World Cup group stage is set to begin on October 29th.  The 2023 Overwatch World Cup playoffs begin on November 3rd.
