If there's anything we've learned from last year, it's that being on a prestigious team, or even a championship team, doesn't disclude you from the roster swap madness that occurs in each off-season. This time, the Worlds MVP as well as arguably runner-up for best mid laner in the world have dropped the tag while Bae "Bengi" Seong-woong, Lee "Scout" Ye-Chan, Bae "Bang" Jun-sik, Lee "Wolf" Jae-wan, Choi "L.i.E.S" Byoung-hoon, and coach Kim "KkOma" Jeong-gyun have all renewed their contracts.
The biggest hit of all is most likely Jang "Marin" Gyeong-hwan who performed exceptionally well at the Season 5 World Championship individually but also played a large role in calling the shots for the reigning team. Lee "Easyhoon" Ji-hoon may not be the greatest player to ever play the game as his teammate and the team's primary midlaner Lee "Faker" Sang-hyeok is, but he provided the organization an outlet to build a growing talent. Easyhoon, while not on par skillwise, granted a wider strategical outlet for the team to explore, and at times, exceeded Faker in usefulness, such as around the Mid-Season Invitational where Azir reigned supreme.
With many of these players having hit the pinnacle of their career, their minds are set to enjoyment and, more likely, financial security within their remaining time as competitors. For this reason, many top contenders have let to Chinese organizations capable of fulfilling massive salaries for these players; the former SKT members are most definitely susceptible to such a temptation.
SKT are the first and only World Champions to reclaim their throne a second time. SKT were recently knocked out of KeSPA cup by an up-and-coming team known as Ever, but are still the most successful organization to ever play the game.
